Riedel’s Bolero Wireless Intercom on Stage at Sadler’s Wells Theatre

Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London has adopted Riedel’s Bolero wireless intercom to ensure reliable and flexible communications across the 10,000-square-meter building and the adjacent Lilian Baylis Studio. Located on London’s iconic Rosebery Avenue, the theatre is renowned as one of the world’s leading dance venues, staging contemporary dance and ballet performances in its 1,560-seat main auditorium. The theatre also has a unique link to Riedel’s home city of Wuppertal through an ongoing residency with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, a partnership that spans more than 35 years.

As well providing a stage for visiting companies, the Sadler’s Wells Theatre is a producing house with a number of associated artists and companies creating original works for the theatre, and many locally produced shows are also recorded for cinema. Visiting OB trucks that are also equipped with Riedel Artist systems can easily interface with the theatre’s systems, creating smoothly integrated workflows and tremendous convenience.

Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London has adopted Riedel’s Bolero to ensure reliable and flexible comms across the 10,000-square-meter building and the adjacent Lilian Baylis Studio.

Bolero covers the spacious theatre with only four antennas. One is located at the side of the stage, with another in the auditorium and the third on the fly floor, which also covers all the dressing room corridors and backstage studios. The fourth antenna uses the IT department infrastructure and covers the cafeteria and the entire Lilian Baylis Studio. The setup also provides coverage for all basement areas including technical offices, dressing rooms, and the orchestra pit, and even provides full coverage in the Sadler’s Wells Studios — despite the studios’ separation from the antennas by several concrete walls.

“The Sadler’s Wells team has taken full advantage of Bolero’s customizability and has fully tailored the system to the theatre’s needs,” said Nacho Lee, UK Sales Manager at Riedel Communications. “The team has made extensive use of Bolero’s profile function, giving each full-time member of staff a dedicated Bolero beltpack that has been set to a profile specific to that person’s requirements. In this way, parameters like volume, screen brightness, and quick menus are preset to the user’s liking.”

Mark Noble, Head of Sound at Sadler’s Wells, has designed highly creative workflows for Bolero using the theatre’s NSA-002A interface. In one example, the team has reassigned Bolero’s red reply button on stage managers’ beltpacks to open a channel to the paging system through the 4W-Interface. This enables stage managers to use the paging system to make backstage calls to all the dressing rooms and other backstage areas from wherever they are. With another profile, the reply button switches between brightness modes to allow the user to remain unseen onstage. The theatre’s NSA-002A sits on a comms network switch that is attached to Wi-Fi, making it easy to reconfigure on the go using a tablet.

“People are amazed by Bolero’s battery life, coverage, and overall user friendliness — and the integrated bottle opener has also come in handy. This versatile system really has worked wonders for us,” said Noble. “With the newly released Bolero 2110 (AES67) mode, we will enjoy an even greater degree of flexibility and scalability, so it’s a great thing that the new license is already included in our stand-alone license. We were looking for truly future-proof equipment and have found it in Bolero.”

Dynaudio Continues Exciting Streak of New Product Launches at CEDIA Expo 2019

On the heels of the release of its highly anticipated Performance series custom-install speaker range and its first-ever Outdoor models, Danish loudspeaker specialist Dynaudio today will take the wraps off its Custom Sub RCC and special control software for ELAN, Control4, and Crestron systems in Booth 943 at CEDIA Expo 2019 in Denver.

Dynaudio Sub RCC

Dynaudio developed the Sub RCC (Reaction Cancelling Configuration) to complement its Performance and Studio custom-installation loudspeaker ranges. The discreet subwoofer is designed to offer additional low-frequency extension to any audio system while facilitating high-performance 2.1 or surround setups without the issues commonly associated with many in-wall subs. It achieves extreme bass performance within a compact form factor, which can be installed in walls, ceilings, or even floors — with no back-box necessary. The RCC topology uses two sets of opposed drivers working together to eliminate unwanted vibration transmission, leaving only the desirable acoustic energy behind. Featuring one-piece construction, the Sub RCC is easy to ship and retrofit because there is no cumbersome back-box to add to its size or the expense of transport.

Other key features include:

  • Mounts on the wall surface or into a standard 2×4 stud-bay before or after construction.
  • Passive subwoofer design with no complex crossovers.
  • Incredibly rigid, compact and low-resonance one-piece extruded aluminum enclosure design.
  • Adaptive bass limitation guarantees zero overload.
  • Frequency response (+/- 3dB): 16Hz – 160Hz.

Amplification is provided by U.S. specialist AudioControl. The RS 500 DSP-controlled unit is precisely matched and tuned out of the box for the Sub RCC with Dynaudio EQs and limiters. Installers can also tweak the unit’s graphic EQ if needed. For more flexibility, each amp can power two Sub RCC units.

New Integration software for ELAN, Control4 and Crestron

Dynaudio has also teamed up with U.K.-based custom-install software house Intrinsic Dev. The company has created bespoke zone-control drivers that enable full integration of Dynaudio’s Music intelligent wireless speakers and Connect wireless transmitter with ELAN, Control4, and Crestron Systems. A driver for Savant will follow later in the year. The Music wireless speaker adapts to both its position in the room as well as ambient noise levels, ensuring the best performance wherever it’s placed. Designed specifically for Dynaudio’s high-end active speakers, Connect allows users to send the device a lossless digital signal and connect Dynaudio’s Xeo and Focus XD loudspeakers wirelessly and in multiple zones.

Dynaudio Performance series

Dynaudio’s Performance series will also debut at the show. The new Performance range marks the entry point to the award-winning Dynaudio Custom Installation product lineup. It is designed to deliver high-quality sound in distributed audio and media rooms as well as other architectural audio applications. The brand-new, high-end slimline product family comprises six in-wall and in-ceiling speakers and a special fire-resistant back-box. All of the new speakers use the same technologies and go through the same expert tuning process as Dynaudio’s legendary home, professional and in-car systems.

Dynaudio Outdoor

Dynaudio’s first-ever dedicated outdoor models, the OW6 and OW8, will also be presented at CEDIA. They are IP65-rated for protection against water and dust, and feature a special UV-resistant finish (available in black or white). They can be used in 8ohm mode with a conventional power amplifier, or be linked in with a 70/100V system thanks to the built-in transformer. An articulating mounting bracket is included.

BlackWire Designs Named Distributor for AVPro Edge’s New Customizable Card-Based HDMI/HDBaseT Matrix Switch

BlackWire Designs, a leading distributor in the custom installation market, today announced that the company will distribute AVPro Edge’s new AC-MX1616-AUHD-HDBT-CHASSIS, the industry’s only customizable, card-based HDMI/HDBaseT matrix switch. For multizone video distribution systems requiring the downmixing of Dolby Atmos/DTS-HD Master Audio, two-channel PCM audio, or both, the flexible unit allows integrators to deliver custom-tailored solutions designed to meet the specific requirements of any installation, without the added cost of unneeded functionality. AVPro Edge named BlackWire as the only distributor authorized to customize the product in-house, offering its signature design services and support to customers.

“When it comes to video distribution, one size doesn’t fit all. That’s why AVPro Edge’s new customizable matrix switch is a complete game-changer for the residential and commercial markets,” said Kevin Luther, owner of BlackWire Designs. “With fixed matrices, integrators are often paying for more than they need — whether it’s too many inputs and outputs or advanced functionality that will go unused. Unfortunately, they may have to pass these costs on to their clients. The switch is a truly forward-thinking solution, and we are thrilled to bring its unique benefits to our customers.”

Available with a total of 16 inputs and 16 outputs, the AC-MX1616-AUHD-HDBT is offered with two HDMI input card options, each of which features two inputs and is capable of 4K60 4:4:4. The AVDM card decodes Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD Master Audio for devices such as streaming media players. AVPro Edge is the only switch manufacturer that provides this capability. For security cameras, on-screen controllers for automation systems, and similar devices, the AUHD card converts two-channel PCM audio into analog. The AUHD-HDBT output card features two zoned HDBaseT outputs, one of which has an HDMI mirror.

With its unmatched flexibility, the AC-MX1616-AUHD-HDBT-CHASSIS dramatically lowers overall solution costs for integrators and their customers. While standard matrix switches offer a fixed number and type of inputs and outputs, the AVPro Edge solution allows dealers to purchase only the amount and type they need for each specific project. So, if an installation doesn’t require more expensive Dolby Atmos decoding, there is no need to include it. The result is a cost-effective solution to meet a system’s current requirements, while offering the flexibility to accommodate its needs of tomorrow.

“We couldn’t be more excited to team up with BlackWire to bring our custom-built matrices to the AV industry,” said Matt Murray, CTO of AVPro Edge. “For integrators, working with the company is a completely unique experience, like having a technology partner that understands all of their needs — from hardware and implementation to product availability. And BlackWire’s easy-to-use website makes it simple to order a custom matrix in any configuration integrators need, backed by unmatched technical support before and after the sale.”

Custom AC-MX1616-AUHD-HDBT-CHASSIS matrix switches are available from BlackWire now and come with free drivers for seamless integration with leading control and automation platforms. AVPro Edge will have the solution on display at CEDIA Expo 2019 at Booth 739.
