At the WFX Conference and Expo later this month, FOR-A® will showcase its range of technology ideal for houses of worship. FOR-A’s WFX booth lineup includes the HVS-490 HANABI video production switcher, Variant Systems Group’s Envivo Studio production suite, ClassX content creation and graphics playout solution, and the ODYSSEY Insight video server. FOR-A will exhibit in Booth #750 during the show which runs from September 17-19 in the Orlando Convention Center.

The compact HANABI HVS-490 opens the door to more affordable 4K production. HDMI 2.0b specification support provides 4K output to a multi-viewer. Offering exclusive features, including MELite™ technology, which extends the switcher’s 2 M/Es to offer 6 M/E performance, the HVS-490 is designed for use in any live environment, including mobile shoots, events, and in-house corporate productions. The switcher provides users with event memory and macro functions, as well as integrated frame synchronizers and multi viewers – making it easy to set up quickly for live performances.

A demo of the latest ClassX solution of 2D/3D character generation and live motion graphics and playout software integrated with FOR-A video switchers will be on the FOR-A WFX booth. ClassX’s graphics suite of solutions is popular with universities, digital signage, live event, and sports production applications. FOR-A is the exclusive distributor of ClassX in North, Central and South America. The agreement provides broadcasters and live event producers with the ability to create and play out ClassX real-time broadcast graphics integrated with FOR-A video switchers.

ClassX offers a complete solution with pixel-perfect, real-time 2D and 3D motion graphics and titling, SportsGraphics, SocialServer, MOS newsroom interface, clip playing automation, picture-in-picture and a multi-functional scripting facility. ClassX is 12G-compatible and supports Dante® digital audio for playout.

ODYSSEY’s Insight Production Server is a multi-channel playout system, available in a two- or four-channel configuration. Offering a Web interface for control from any device with a web browser (no installation required), the video server provides a wide range of supported wrappers and codecs for media contribution and video play out with time delay playback. Insight’s flexible event processor allows users to connect multiple devices and interact with FOR-A production video switchers, routing switchers, CG generators, GPIO-connected devices and other studio equipment to orchestrate event triggering for a seamless production.

2019 Champions League Deploys FOR-A FT-ONE-SS4K Super Slow-Motion Cameras During Final Match

During the 2019 Champions League final in Madrid, several FOR-A Ultra High-Speed FT-ONE-SS4K cameras were utilized for critical slow motion replays as part of the live broadcast. The same camera will be on display within the FOR-A booth (Hall 2, Stand A51) during IBC 2019 at the RAI Amsterdam this week. The FT-ONE-SS4K will be demonstrated with the ZE-ONE 4K zoom extractor during IBC.

Specially designed for live, instant replay in ultra-slow motion, the FOR-A® FT-ONE-SS4K supports UHD shot at up to 1000 frames per second. It provides a continual, real-time 4K live output. A native 2/3-inch image sensor enables the use of a B4 bayonet broadcast lens directly on the camera. With a 2.5 stop light advantage over previous generations of super slow-motion cameras, the FT-ONE-SS4K offers higher frame rate image capture than was possible before. It supports HDR/SDR and WCG. The camera also features 24 axis color correction. Canon’s OLED viewfinder is compatible with the FT-ONE-SS4K and can be used as an option. Flicker Correction is also available as an option. FT-ONE-SS4K camera systems have been used during many high-profile live sports events from all over the world.

The ZE-ONE 4K extraction system allows FT-ONE-SS4K users to frame and extract desired 4K image areas to capture the action for HD replays. The system provides operators with an intuitive touch-screen interface to frame and extract specified HD scenes at any size from 4K sources. The ZE-ONE allows operators to smoothly zoom in or out and includes an embedded audio delay processor.

FOR-A Hybrid IP/SDI Systems to Shine at IBC 2019

In support of the many broadcasters still transitioning from traditional SDI to IP-based systems, the FOR-A® booth at IBC 2019 will include hybrid IP/SDI products, such as: the USF-10IP IP Gateway, the SOM-100 media orchestration platform, and the MBP-1000VS-IP video server.

FOR-A has an array of production switchers, video servers, processors and test signal generators that support both 12G-SDI/4K and 3G-SDI/HD resolution. The company is a proponent of 12G-SDI technology as an ideal format for sports and other 4K productions, because it offers reliability, ease of operation and industry-standard interfacing.

IBC 2019 will be held from September 13-17th at the RAI Amsterdam. FOR-A will exhibit in Hall 2, Stand A51.

One product that serves as a bridge between IP and baseband environments is FOR-A’s USF-10IP IP Gateway series. The USF-10IP series is a 10 GbE video-over-IP module series that offers high-quality conversion of any standard IP video format, including: SMPTE ST 2022-6/7 and SMPTE ST 2110. The unit also acts as a translator between SDI baseband and IP systems and is compatible with 4K UHD (2SI/SQD) and multi-format input/output video.

USF-10IP Series

Available modules offered in this series include: the USF-10IP, which converts between IP formats; the USF-10IPSDI6-FS, which comes standard with one 12G-SDI input and one output, 2SI/SQD conversion, and offers simultaneous conversion of up to six inputs/outputs selectable with six streams; and the USF-10IPSDI12-FS module, which also comes standard with one 12G-SDI input and one output, as well as 2SI/SQD conversion, and offers simultaneous conversion of up to six inputs and six outputs, selectable with twelve streams. The USF-10IPSDI-6-FS and the USF-10IPSDI12-FS offer a TICO encoder/decoder. With this encoder/decoder, 12G-SDI 4K UHD uncompressed images can be compressed to TICO and processed via 10GbE network.

An integrated baseband/IP control and monitoring system, the SOM-100 is also designed based on hierarchical architecture using Ember+ for a flexible system configuration to be used in a mixed SDI/IP environment. It delivers seamless interoperability between baseband and IP equipment and traffic management. The SOM-100 provides operation of a variety of video equipment such as SDI/IP/RS422 routers, multi viewers, video processors, tally devices and button panels, and monitored centrally from its GUI.

At IBC 2019, the MBP-1000VS-IP IP video server, the ESG-4200 test signal generator, the MFR-3000 routing switcher, the USF-10IP-SDI6-FS IP gateway, the MV-1220 multi viewer, the Media Links MD8600 video gateway and the MDX4090 IP video switcher & router are controlled by the SOM-100 in a SDI/IP hybrid system.

SDI and IP routing switchers are managed as one routing switcher in a virtual group. The SOM-100 can execute routing system control and process control, so that it supports collective operational changes of multiple pieces of equipment and executes time reservation. The system also features a web interface for easy access from multiple computers.

A 12G-SDI/IP multi-channel video server, the MBP-1000VS series is ideal for 4K editing environments, offering multi-input/output 4K and HD support and ingest, playout and 4K recording functionality. FOR-A is offering a range of MBP-1000VS interfaces for 12G-SDI or video over IP transmission, including 12G-SDI, 3G-SDI, and SFP+, to accommodate varying user needs for inputs/outputs and size of internal storage (SSD). The MBP-1000VS-IP includes a SFP+ port for 10 Gbps video over IP I/O. It supports up to eight-channel MPEG-2 codec or four-channel 4K XVAC™ codec and can switch channels from encoding to decoding as needed. Supported formats for video over IP include SMPTE ST 2022-6 and ST 2110.

SFJAZZ Requires Rock-Solid Stability of FOR-A Switcher to Produce Over 400 Live Shows a Year

As the first concert venue designed specifically to optimize the acoustics and performance of jazz music, the 36,000-square-foot, $64 million SFJAZZ Center has a reputation for quality. And with over 400 live shows recorded each year, reliability and durability rank just as important to the Center’s video supervisor.

When it came time to upgrade the six-year-old FOR-A HVS-350 video switcher, SFJAZZ Video Production Supervisor Jake Drake turned to the same vendor he’d used for the past several years of live production. “The stability of a FOR-A product is unmatched,” explained Drake. “We turn it on, and it just keeps on running. We do over 400 shows a year of live music, plus another 40-50 with our rental partners. This switcher is heavily used. We need 100 percent, rock-solid stability. FOR-A is where it’s at for us.”

Drake said he’s extensively demoed competitive products from other top manufacturers, but FOR-A’s customer support and the feature-rich design of the FOR-A HANABI HVS-490 video production switcher rose to the top of his list.

The new HVS-490 was delivered quickly and has already been put through its paces on numerous live shows since its installation in May. FOR-A provided SFJAZZ with a loaner switcher free of charge while Drake waited for his new switcher.

“Features such as the web panel, macros and two M/Es have been a big advantage to us already,” said Drake. “With the macro functionality, we’re able to do a complex picture-in-picture. Having two M/Es is also huge for us. We’re able to preview transitions. Any M/E can be assigned to multiple monitors on stage – using the same control panel. Overall, it packs so much more that we can achieve into one switcher.”

The SFJAZZ media suite is located a floor above the SFJAZZ Center’s Robert N. Miner Auditorium. Live shows are switched and cameras are controlled remotely by one person. Drake has found the web panel feature a huge help in this regard.

“Having this web panel feature and controlling the switcher via a computer allows us to streamline our productions in a way we couldn’t before. We just installed this feature, but I believe it’s something we’ll take advantage of a lot in the future.”

FOR-A to Introduce Converters and Latest Version of Signal Processor

Selected for use at the upcoming 2019 World Rugby event, 2020 Tokyo Summer games, and new professional football leagues in Europe, FOR-A’s FRC-9100 broadcast frame rate converters and FA-9600 dual channel signal processors are gaining attention from premiere broadcasters looking for the highest quality image conversion technology at these high profile events.

At IBC this year, FOR-A will introduce the new FRC-9100 frame rate converter. The FRC-9100 builds upon the success of FOR-A’s FRC-9000 frame rate converter – trusted by broadcasters throughout the world to deliver the highest quality live frame rate conversion for sports and other events. Designed for live broadcast transmission, the FRC-9100 offers up to two independent channels of 3G/HD/SD-SDI frame rate conversion, along with optional 4K and 12G-SDI support. The FRC-9100 will be deployed by several broadcasters to deliver high-quality conversion for next year’s Tokyo Summer Games in both HD and 4K/UHD operation.

Also at IBC will be the latest version of FOR-A’s FA-9600 multi-purpose signal processor, which was first shown at NAB in Las Vegas this April. The new optional SFP+ card allows the FA-9600 to install SFP+ modules. With it, the FA-9600 can convert IP inputs to SDI, SDI inputs to IP output, as well as SDI inputs to optical output. The FA-9600 is ideal for use in HDR live production or 4K HDR and HD-HDR/SDR simultaneous production.


The latest version of the FA-9600 supports 3D LUT for advanced color grading and Sony’s SR Live workflow for live HDR production. The FA-9600 flexibility allows for customers own LUT’s to be loaded into the FA-9600 and saved to a user LUT for instant recall. The dual-channel unit also provides HDR and Wide Color Gamut support and conversion of multiple formats, such as: 12G-SDI, 4K UHD, 1080p, and SD/HD-SDI. SR Live for HDR to 2K-SDR down conversion provides the same picture quality without deterioration.

In addition to conversion, each channel offers independent frame sync, frame delay (up to 8 frames), color correction, processing amplification, 1080p/1080i level A/B conversion, and many more features for video and audio processing.

FOR-A will also debut the MCC-4K-A motion-compensated UHDTV standards converter at the show. The MCC-4K-A provides high-quality frame rate and format conversion with motion adaptive capability for 4K UHD (12G-SDI/quad link 3G-SDI)/3G/HD-SDI signals and offers support for quad link 2SI or SQD format, as well as single link 12G BNC and SFP connectivity. The MCC-4K-A offers dynamic range conversion between PQ, HLG, S-Log 3, SDR and other log curves, and provides color gamut conversion between ITU-R BT.709 and ITU-R BT.2020 standards.


The MCC-4K-A is ideal for live frame rate conversion applications where UHD content sourced at a chosen production frame rate needs to be converted to other frame rates for international contribution and distribution, including sports, concerts and breaking news environments. The MCC-4K-A makes simultaneous transmissions in UHD and HD easy, and is also a perfect solution for integrating HD and 3G content into UHD programming. The MCC-4K-A is developed by UK-based InSync Technology Ltd, and will be exclusively distributed worldwide by FOR-A.

FOR-A Offering Extended Warranties on FA Series’ Processors and HVS Series’ Switchers in U.S

As of the first of August, all FOR-A FA series signal processors will have an additional four years on their current one-year warranty, resulting in a full five-year warranty. All FOR-A HVS series video switchers will have two years added to their current one-year warranty, resulting in a three year-warranty.

The extended warranty includes:

  • Free product firmware updates for the life of the product, whether in or out of the warranty period.
  • Coverage transfer to the new owner at no cost should you sell your product
  • Parts and labor with any defect under normal operating conditions

FOR-A to Intro Advanced 12G Tech and Showcase Live Production Systems Used by Universities

As evidenced with the introduction of new technology that supports uncompressed 12G video streams, FOR-A® continues to push the envelope of what’s possible. At IBC 2019, the company will introduce an optional IP interface card for its 3 M/E HANABI HVS-6000 vision mixer and 2 M/E HANABI HVS-6000M vision mixer that provides 25G input/output capability. FOR-A will also showcase its HANABI HVS-1200, a compact 4K/HD compatible vision mixer that supports 12G-SDI, and the new Envivo Studio – an all-in-one live production system.

The new HVS-6000IP-8IO card provides the HVS-6000 and HVS-6000M vision mixer with 25G IP input/output capability. With it, the HVS-6000/6000M can convert IP inputs to SDI, or SDI to IP outputs. It removes the need for IP gateways in hybrid IP/SDI systems and supports as many uncompressed video streams as 12G-SDI can send and receive. Eight uncompressed 4K UHD streams can be processed per card, with input/output parameters set within each SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) port. SMPTE ST 2022 and ST 2110 standards are currently supported. Control protocols to be supported include the Ember+ protocol and the AMWA NMOS IS-04/05 network control API’s.

In addition to offering 12G-SDI capability on all inputs and outputs, this 12G-SDI vision mixer uses a single cable link. Video signals are processed throughout as a single image. The HVS-6000 is a 12 RU vision mixer, with a maximum of 80 inputs/32 outputs or 64 inputs/48 outputs. The HVS-6000M is a 7 RU vision mixer with a maximum of 32 inputs/24 outputs. Designed for use in 4K UHD systems in the same manner as HD systems, both mixers provide the same number of inputs/outputs, M/E’s and keyers with 4K and HD operations.

The HANABI HVS-1200, a compact 4K/HD compatible vision mixer, will be on display at IBC as a package supporting 12G-SDI – with the MFR-1000 routing switcher offering 12G-SDI compatibility across a matrix of up to 16 inputs/16 outputs. The HVS-1200 vision mixer is ideal for applications such as: live staging, event productions, OB vans, house of worship, and in flypacks. The integrated HVS-1200/MFR-1000 combination creates a compact and affordable 12G-SDI/4K production system. The HVS-1200 also utilizes a single cable for image processing and is configurable as both a 12G-SDI/4K and as a 3G-SDI/HD vision mixer.

Being shown for the first time in Europe are the Envivo Studio production suite and Envivo Replay sports and live event replay solution from Variant Systems Group. Envivo Replay offers a complete replay solution packaged in an intuitive user interface with continuous multiple iso-channel recording capabilities, simultaneous clip storage of multiple angles to clip bins, playlists for highlights playback, built-in branding capabilities, direct publishing to social media platforms, and support for high speed super slow-motion cameras. Both Envivo systems will be shown with a Dante® audio interface, enabling the systems to support uncompressed, multi-channel, low latency digital audio over a standard Ethernet network. Studio and Replay also support NDI® (Network Device Interface), a free protocol for Video-Over-IP, developed by NewTek.

Western Michigan University (WMU) uses two Envivo Replay systems for social media branding and video playout. Envivo Replay captures slow motion footage of the school’s Division I football team for in-stadium replays and streaming coverage to ESPN and ESPN+. UCLA Athletics uses Envivo Replay to help analyze player performance during team practice.
