Leader Test Instruments Keep Mediapro OBs On Track

Leader LV5490, LV5350 and LV5333 test equipment formed the core signal monitoring resource deployed by Barcelona-based television production group Mediapro for its coverage of the recent UEFA Champions League Final in Madrid. Selected by UEFA as the host broadcaster, Mediapro fielded multiple OB vehicles, 42 cameras and more than 150 crew to capture the match for 4K and HD simulcasting. The project was accomplished in cooperation with system specialist and production services provider Mediaburst.

“The Leader instruments gave us the full range of facilities needed to ensure accurate colour matching from the very large number of signal sources,” comments Mediapro CTO and Operations Manager Emili Planas Quintana. “Shooting in 4K is especially demanding as the fourfold increase in resolution compared with HD means every aspect of the production process has to be handled with even greater care to ensure the improved quality is maintained right through the signal processing chain. Leader’s operator-assignable multiscreen feature is particularly useful for side-by-side comparison of the various signal parameters.”


“This was the latest in a long series of high profile sports events at which Leader instruments have been deployed to ensure high quality signal monitoring,” adds Kevin Salvidge, Leader’s European Regional Development Manager. “Sport OB continues to be the primary driver for 4K-UHD broadcasting as the extra detail which can be delivered really brings match coverage alive. A key feature of the LV5490 is the ease with which it can be configured to match a wide choice of production standards. These can be selected either at the time of purchase or added as optional upgrades during the proven very long lifetime of Leader test instruments.”

As well as the UEFA Champions League Final in Madrid, Mediapro also used Leader test equipment in Baku for the production of the UEFA Europa League Final and in Portugal for the UEFA Nations League Finals.

The LV5490 is waveform monitor supporting the full range of standard video production and transmission resolutions from 525 and 625 standard definition up to 3840 x 2160 and 4096 x 2160 4K ultra-high definition. It incorporates a 1920 x 1080 9 inch LCD monitor with a wide viewing angle and high quality colorimetry. This allows simultaneous analysis of up to four video channels. Equipped with eight input connectors, the LV 5490 accepts up to two 4K signals simultaneously. In the 4K video format mode, 3G-SDI dual link or quad link is supported. Up to four 3G-SDI dual link 4K video inputs or up to two 3G-SDI quad link 4K video inputs can be selected for display, or two sets of HD-SDI dual link signals. In the SDI mode, up to four signals can be displayed simultaneously. The LV 5490 also accepts video signals via two-sample interleave as well as square division. Two-sample interleave is the approved standard for 4K.

The LV5350 waveform monitor incorporates all the SDI facilities of the top-of-the-range LV5600 and LV7600 minus the IP measurement capabilities which are currently required by only a minority of production and post-production teams. These include engineering-related features such as test pattern generation, closed-caption monitoring, CIE colour chart, high dynamic range measurement, focus assist, customisable screen layout, tally interface, 4K/UHD operation and 12G-SDI interfaces. The LV5350 and LV7300 also incorporate Leader’s intuitive CINEZONE and CINELITE which are familiar to many camera crews, editors and colourists. A new focus detection algorithm enables the two instruments to sense edges across a very wide range of image contrast levels.

Compatible with over 20 HD-SDI/SD-SDI formats, Leader’s LV5333 is designed for deployment in studios or technical areas, or attached to a camera tripod. The integral 6.5 inch XGA TFT LCD screen can also be used to display video signal waveform, vectorscope or the video image. CINELITE, CINEZONE, histogram, gamma display, gamut and level error display functions are included as standard.

LV5333 features include cable length display, external timing display and field frequency deviation display. SDI-embedded audio can be extracted and two user-selectable audio channels sent as an AES/EBU stream to a BNC output. The levels of up to eight audio channels can be checked using on-screen bar displays. User-configurable multi-display combinations allow easy inspection of signal parameters. Full-screen displays can alternatively be selected to allow detailed review of specific elements.

MEDIAPRO secures rights in Canada to Concacaf Nations League

MEDIAPRO has secured the media rights in Canada to the 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League, the new three-tier men’s national team competition involving all 41 Concacaf (North and Central America and the Caribbean) Member Associations.

The 102 group stage matches, including Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team’s two home and two away matches, as well as the Final Championship (two semi-finals, the 3rd place match and the Final), will be aired on OneSoccer, the 24/7 digital platform devoted to delivering world-class dedicated Canadian soccer coverage and content.  All Canada games will be enhanced by live studio pre-, half-time and post-match shows, together with interviews, features and other content.

Canada qualified for League A, the top tier of the inaugural Concacaf Nations League, after posting a perfect 4-0 record in the 34-nation qualifying round, finishing second to Haiti, and will meet Cuba and the USA in Group A over four matches played from September through November. The winner of each of the four League A groups will progress to the Final Championship, which will be played in June 2020.

The action begins on Thursday September 5th with the opening match between League C teams US Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands. Canada’s first match will kick off two days later, on September 7th, at BMO Field in Toronto, as against Caribbean opponent Cuba. Canada defeated Cuba 7-0 in the recent Concacaf Gold Cup tournament, with hat-tricks from Jonathan David and Lucas Cavallini and an early second-half goal from Junior Hoilett.

Following the away match against Cuba on September 10th, Canada will return to BMO Field to take on the USA, which fell 1-0 to Mexico in last month’s Gold Cup final.

OneSoccer to air live coverage of League1 Ontario Men’s and Women’s championship finals

THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO signs LORENZO SILVA to produce series content based on his novels

THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO, through its production company GLOBOMEDIA, has signed a collaboration agreement with writer Lorenzo Silva for the adaptation of fiction content inspired by his novels. The first two projects included under the agreement are to be a series based on his latest book “Si esto es una mujer” (published by DESTINY), written in collaboration with Noemí Trujillo, and the long-awaited series about his two fetish characters and members of the Central Operations Unit (UCO) of the Guardia Civil, Rubén Bevilacqua and Virginia Chamorro, protagonists of nine novels and two stories (published by DESTINY).

Author of more than 30 novels and numerous works of non-fiction, as well as children’s stories and titles for younger readers, Lorenzo Silva, one of the top best sellers of the Spanish creative scene, also has experience as a series and documentary screenwriting, including the cinematographic adaptations of his novels. He was nominated for the 2004 Goya for the screenplay of La flaqueza del bolchevique and co-author of 20-N. Los últimos días de Franco, which received Spanish Television Academy’s Best TV Movie award in 2009. As a multi-award-winning writer, Silva won the Planeta Award for “La marca del meridiano”, his seventh novel in the Bevilacqua and Chamorro series, and El Nadal, for “El alquimista impaciente”, the second novel of the saga. The author is a reference of the Spanish modern narrative and a pre-eminent author among the contemporary classics of the literary gender.

In association with GLOBOMEDIA (THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO), Silva himself will be responsible for these adaptations at the helm of the writer’s room in charge of each one. In the case of “Si esto es una mujer”, the author will also collaborate with Noemí Trujillo, co-author of this new fiction saga, starring Inspector Manuela Mauri, who in this novel investigates a chilling case that reveals the worst scourges of our society.

With regard to the adaptation as a television series of the investigations of Bevilacqua and Chamorro’s cases, the announcement comes as welcome news for fans, who have long called for a televised version of the characters. The project involving Lorenzo Silva and GLOBOMEDIA (THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO) will be based on a storyline that will merge two of the titles published to date.

Barrera, one of the most respected professionals in the Latin American audiovisual scene, will be Head of Content at MEDIAPRO’s office in Colombia. By hiring Barrera, THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO once again confirms its commitment to high quality international content.

With a career spanning two decades in which she has specialised in creating, developing and producing content for television, Juliana Barrera has amassed extensive experience in writing and producing series of fiction and entertainment formats, and in directing content teams.

Since 2011 she has been linked to Caracol Televisión as a Producer, Head of Content and Creative Director. In this last role, she generated new business opportunities. The Paraguayan Football Association choose MEDIAPRO to implement VAR in its División de Honor

MEDIAPRO has been selected by the Paraguayan Football Association (AFP) as the company to implement VAR technology (Video Assistant Referee) in the country’s División de Honor for the next three seasons: 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Furthermore, drawing on MEDIAPRO’s extensive experience, the company will also be responsible for the training and education of referees and certifying stadiums in order for them to implement VAR systems from January 2020, to coincide with the start of the Torneo Apertura. It will follow a decentralised model with three VAR units being sent to the stadiums to provide video refereeing services to a total of 792 games.


This agreement with which the Executive Committee of the  Paraguayan Football Association places its trust in MEDIAPRO follows on from the group’s experience as providers of VAR in the Copa Libertadores and the Copa América, to implement the VAR technology in Paraguayan football for the first time.

The new deal sees the number of federations and countries who have trusted the MEDIAPRO group as their official VAR provider continue to grow. The company currently offers its services to official league competitions in Portugal, Greece, Mexico, Chile, The United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Kuwait, Colombia and Paraguay. The Pan American Games, live on YouTube for the first time ever

The MEDIAPRO channel (youtube.com/mediapro) will bring all the emotion the competition has to offer to fans throughout the world (except the Americas and Turkey), providing a 24/7 broadcast to ensure viewers won’t miss a minute.

Up until the 11th of August, the official MEDIAPRO YouTube channel will come to you live from Lima, televising the biggest events in America’s largest multi-disciplinary sporting competition, with more than 6,000 athletes taking part across 39 sports and 62 disciplines.


Just a few days into the broadcast, the content from the Lima 2019 Pan American Games has already totalled 200,000 impressions and 400,000 minutes of watch time. Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia head the list for the most views by country.

This alliance was all made possible thanks to the Peruvian Olympic Committee assigning the rights, trusting MEDIAPRO’s vast experience in managing channels on the video platform.
