The University of Georgia is the flagship research university for the state of Georgia and one of the oldest public universities in the United States. As a Division 1 member of the Southeastern Conference of collegiate sports, the University of Georgia competes in 19 sports, and its teams have won over 40 national championships.

A new Artist 128 mainframe was installed in the central core that services Sanford Stadium and the Stegeman Coliseum and is linked via fiber to frames at the Foley Field baseball facility, the Jack Turner Stadium, the Turner Soccer Complex, the Gabrielsen Natatorium, and the William Porter Payne and Porter Otis Payne Indoor Athletic Facility. In addition, a Bolero wireless intercom system comprised of 15 beltpacks and seven antennas (some antennas are routinely moved to handle various other requirements) replaced a wired solution that was in place at several venues. The new Bolero system integrates directly with Artist and enables all user groups, such as the band, cheer squad, DJ, operations team, and video control team, to communicate using a single system, without conversion or being on a party line.

The solution has proven particularly valuable at the men’s and women’s basketball and gymnastics events where multiple wireless channels have replaced an existing party line setup.

“When it came time to upgrade our comms capabilities across campus, we knew we wanted to stay with Riedel and Artist. And then the introduction of Bolero made it a no-brainer,” said Mike Bilbow, Assistant Athletic Director, Digital and Production, University of Georgia Athletic Association. “Bolero gives us so much more flexibility, and its reliability and sound quality are bar-none – both critical factors for events with 90,000 cheering fans. With many of our users connecting wirelessly now, we’re able to save money on cabling infrastructure. And it’s great to be able to salvo presets for each event, which frees up our engineering staff for other duties.”

Hong Kong Production Houses Invest in Riedel’s Bolero for Large-Scale Event Production

The two companies, which have common customers and often work together on AV and broadcast projects, each purchased two complete Bolero systems including beltpacks and antennas.

Founded in 1990, A-Team Plus is an event consulting and management firm specializing in audio, video, lighting, and stage design for concerts, major celebrations, award ceremonies, private parties, and other events. The company has 30 dedicated team members with local knowledge and regional experience.

“In our live event environments, a broad range of coverage for each antenna and long beltpack battery life are key factors in ensuring a seamless production,” said Ray Mok, Managing Director at A-Team Plus. “Riedel’s Bolero has exceeded our performance expectations in both these areas — and when we saw how easily Bolero can be integrated with legacy 2-wire systems, we were sold. My team loves Bolero’s plug-and-play capabilities, and we look forward to using Bolero in our upcoming projects.”

Show Bros specializes in rental of professional lighting and audio equipment, with an inventory of carefully selected products, well-trained technicians, and a range of services that can be customized to the requirements of every client and every event.

“We had been on the lookout for a reliable and robust wireless intercom solution. We evaluated all of the major manufacturers, but after a demo of Riedel’s Bolero, we made our decision in only two hours,” said David Chan, Managing Director at Show Bros. “We know we made the right choice with Bolero because it provides exceptional benefits for our end users. The time that the Riedel team spent explaining the system to us validated our decision even more, and it’s good to know that their support is only a phone call away.”

Riedel Further Expands APAC Footprint with Two New Appointments

“We combined Riedel Asia-Pacific into a single region in 2015, and we’ve seen some excellent growth since then,” said Cameron O’Neill, Director, Asia-Pacific. “This has come to include technical service and repair capabilities in the Asia-Pacific region, localized sources for training and education, and generally being able to get closer to our current and future customers.”

To broaden knowledge and empower Riedel customers, Julian Hewitt has been appointed as Regional Training Manager. As part of this very strategic role, Hewitt will lead the development and deployment of various training materials, workshops, and industry educational programs. Hewitt’s 10 years of Riedel experience has covered roles from user to consultant and he has worked extensively with many key customers in the region including Lighthouse Church in Singapore, TV18 in India, PCCW in Hong Kong, and the Sydney Opera House in Australia.

“Having excellent equipment is only half the story. Having amazing operators and engineers using the equipment completes the picture.” said Hewitt. “With comprehensive training materials and educational programs tailored to the specific needs of the region, our APAC customers will get even more out of their Riedel gear.”

To further strengthen pan-regional communication and awareness, Riedel has also appointed Deidre Joubert as Regional Marketing Manager, Asia-Pacific. With experience in commercial roles in both professional sport and event broadcast for events such as the America’s Cup and Ryder Cup, Joubert will focus on supporting the Asia-Pacific region by developing a more localized approach.

“Our marketing strategy needs to reflect, both, the differences and similarities in customer motivations and requirements across this economically and culturally diverse region while providing a conduit to the full range of Riedel’s knowledge and global experience,” said Joubert. “To be effective in our communication and have a genuine impact, we have to be able to talk to our customers where they are, in a language they understand. By developing local support structures, we increase our ability to influence decisions and deliver positive outcomes for Riedel.”

“Working with Riedel’s wired and wireless communications solutions, we’ve been able to interconnect many different spaces — and their various events — over a single network architecture,” said Thomas Legros, Stage Manager at Le Couvent des Jacobins. “The installation provides the reliable and scalable communications system we need. And, given Riedel’s expertise in real-time media networks, we’re confident that it also will help us to meet future communications and signal transport requirements.”

Le Couvent des Jacobins convention center features 1,000-, 500-, and 300-seat halls, plus 4,000 square meters of exhibition space and 25 committee rooms located around the historic building and its modern extension. The technical audiovisual design was conceived by Vincent Taurisson on behalf of the scenography agency Architecture & Technique and perfectly blends state-of-the-art technology with Gothic and modern architecture. Fiber optic connectivity, soundproofing, and ultra-high-performance video broadcasting equipment are integrated throughout the facilities.

The Riedel solution gives the team at Le Couvent des Jacobins the benefit of crystal-clear communications with flexibility enabled by deployment over a decentralized IP network. The addition of Bolero wireless technology to the Artist system, SmartPanels, and Performer digital partyline system helped to address the many different requirements of various rooms and meeting halls.

“Riedel intercom is now ‘part of the furniture’ in our new convention center, making stage managers’ lives so much easier and enabling very agile programming,” said Laurent Knobloch-Bard, Productions Director at Le Couvent des Jacobins. “We really enjoy running such a reliable, easy-to-configure communication system in our facilities. We very quickly got used to the user-friendly wireless packs and SmartPanels — and the immense convenience they bring to our daily work. We cannot imagine how we’d manage our productions without such a great communications tool.”

Expanded Riedel Intercoms Take to the Ice at Lanxess Arena

As Germany’s largest multifunctional arena, with up to 20,000 seats and 83,700 square meters of usable space, the Lanxess Arena has been hosting major events of all kinds for over 20 years. Since the very beginning, the arena has also been the home of the eight-time German ice hockey champion Cologne Sharks.

After extensive testing, Arena Management GmbH chose a decentralized Riedel comms solution based on two Artist-32 digital matrix intercom nodes, with one Artist frame in the production control room and a second one in the central technical area below the arena. This two-frame strategy allowed technicians to access an existing network infrastructure beneath the facility to create required redundancies.

“Since its completion in 1998, the Lanxess Arena has been relying on Riedel comms. Now, this comprehensive intercom upgrade is a gift to ourselves for our 20th anniversary,” said Martin Rebiszewski, Technical Manager, Arena Management GmbH. “In terms of reliability and flexibility, the products from our neighboring city of Wuppertal really are unmatched. And, with its unparalleled scalability, the Artist infrastructure is perfect for multifunctional halls with constantly changing requirements.”

Thanks to its modular structure, the Artist ecosystem can be easily expanded to match the specific conditions of various Lanxess Arena events. The ability to effortlessly integrate rented Riedel accessories, such as SmartPanels and Bolero wireless intercoms, has been particularly valuable for larger events and productions.

The Artist ecosystem with 23 2300-Series SmartPanels enables flexible and creative workflows for the Arena Management GmbH production team. At Cologne Sharks hockey games, the communications system not only connects production, camera, sound, and lighting staff, but also integrates referees, house announcers, and the DJ.

“Ice hockey allows for particularly spectacular staging, but it also imposes exacting demands on TV and event production. By enabling clear and reliable communications between all participants, the production team can now present the Cologne Sharks games in an even better light. With this Artist installation, the Lanxess Arena is prepared to overcome any production challenge,” said Niklas Rautenberg, Account Manager at Riedel Communications. “We are very pleased to have renewed our long-term partnership with Arena Management GmbH and are already looking forward to the next ice hockey season.”
