The RTS chooses StudioTalk to video broadcast its radio programmes

The Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS) is a public service audiovisual company, owned by the media group SSR (Swiss Broadcasting and Television Corporation), which offers programmes on four radio channels, two TV channels and numerous digital platforms.

“The RTS project uses all the strengths of StudioTalk, whether in production, channel branding, monitoring or distribution. Working hand in hand, we were able to make our solution evolve to meet their needs,” comments Olivier Waty, Workflows and Media Solutions Director at BCE.

StudioTalk, a solution developed by Broadcasting Centre Europe (BCE), is a complete solution for live and non-live video production with the management of the editorial content of the shows, the channel branding and the sets as well as the broadcasting of the programmes on any platform.

Stéphan_Mahrer“We needed to take a new step with “Forum”, and we were looking for a solution that could offer us all the tools we needed to make television from the same interface. StudioTalk was the answer.” Explains Stéphan Mahrer, Responsable mise en image des productions radio at RTS.

In order to enrich the user experience on the Internet and on social networks, it was important for RTS to shoot its most important radio programmes, namely “La matinale” and “Forum”. Using StudioTalk, RTS creates real talkshows, broadcast these on their website, on social networks and especially on television.

“For StudioTalk users, it’s very easy to find all the tools they need to do their production, whether it’s Picture in Picture, enrichment or the management of the screens on the set. The user also has the option to switch to the automatic production mode to perform another task during a broadcast and then regain control in due course,” adds Stéphan Mahrer.

More than an advanced production solution, StudioTalk also allows the RTS to monitor its equipment via a real-time monitoring interface of all the elements of their workflow.

Philippe_Staehlin“In StudioTalk, we have access to a technical supervision that usually appears on more expensive systems. This allows us to have an overview of the services and monitor the operations. This will allow a person to perform complex support tasks even for a Level 1 intervention support, restarting one or another system to ensure its availability during live production.” Explains Philippe Staehlin, Chef Secteur Systèmes Broadcast at RTS.

BCE has also supported the RTS teams in the integration of their new studio. The solution has been customized to meet the customer’s expectations. Working hand in hand, RTS and BCE made the solution evolve and to allow any employee, with a technical background or not, to use the solution easily.

“In this project, what was really important for us was the relationship with BCE, we found a real partner with whom we made our show and our tool evolve at the same time.” Concludes Stéphan Mahrer.

Custom Consoles Completes New Technical Furniture Projects for Radio Télévision Suisse

These include six desks for a radio news control room at the RTS radio facility in Lausanne. A second Module-R desk for a colour-grading suite plus 22 custom-designed height-adjustable edit suite desks have also been provided at the network’s headquarters in Geneva.

“We are very pleased to have been selected for these projects,” comments Sales Manager Gary Fuller. “A long-established Custom Consoles customer, RTS already has a large Module-R dual-desk ingest news ingest suite, nine edit-suite desks, a grading suite desk and a MediaWall monitor display mounting system.”

The radio news control room comprises three workstations. Largest of this group is a triple-operator U-shaped desk from the Custom Consoles’ MDesk Technical range, visually linked to the news presentation studio by a large window. The desk houses three audio mixing panels embedded in the work surface.

An additional desk in the control room, designed for single-operator use, is used for control of the streaming radio-news-related video to the internet. A third desk, from the MDesk Technical range, is a double sided unit for use by journalists and auxiliary staff.

In the adjacent room is a 2 x 1.75 metre L-shaped desk with an integral audio mixer plus two rectangular monitor display screens on Ergotron operator-adjustable arms. The Ergotron arms are mounted at the rear of most desk positions. Each desk is finished in black with a light-grey worktop.

“The 22 edit suite desks provided for RTS’ Geneva HQ are all 2.2 metres wide by 1 metre front-to-back,” Gary Fuller adds. “Height-adjustable desks have become the industry-wide preference among video editors and graphics staff rather than being viewed by their supervisors as a luxury. This is partly due to the increase in hot-desking. The edit suite desks we designed for RTS are based on our SystemTwo but with an additional centre-rear leg to provide even greater stability that the standard mode. Each desk is equipped with three electrically motorised legs which can be set to any required height from 67 cm to 1.25 metres above floor level. Two monitor mounting pillars are positioned at the rear of each desk plus a third pillar to support an audio mixer.”

The colour grading suite desk is designed for single-operator use and is fitted with a Filmlight Blackboard 2 control surface embedded in the worktop plus user-adjustable monitor mounts. It is similar in styling and facilities to an existing Custom Consoles colour grading suite desk at RTS.

X Factor Italy broadcast producer relies on RTS intercoms

The system was designed and built by One TV’s parent company – and Italy’s largest broadcast systems integrator – Professional Show.

Based on its long experience with RTS, Professional Show designed and built the OB truck with OMNEO media networking architecture at its heart, providing the ultimate IP solution for professional intercom applications.

“For a production like X Factor Italy everything depends completely on a reliable intercom system – without intercom there is no broadcast!” explains RTS Senior Sales Manager Nico Lewis. “Because of their previous experience with RTS, both Andrea Gianolli (CEO) and Stefano Gianolli (Audio Specialist) were quick to realize the potential of our solution – the RTS products that they’ve used in other systems over the years have never let them down, because they are based on proven technology that is totally stable.”

In the truck, an RTS ADAM-M mid-size modular matrix equipped with an OMI OMNEO interface card facilitates RTS KP-5032 and KP-4016 keypanels as well as RTS DKP-4016 desktop keypanels. With the choice of OMNEO IP technology, the OB truck operates a fully IP-based workflow, connecting directly to the production site’s L3 Ethernet network as well as combining seamlessly with any Dante-enabled audio devices.

The system also offers the ability to remotely configure any keypanel from a supervisor keypanel with the RTS AZedit configuration software, allowing supervisors to manage multiple ADAM intercom systems, re-assign users to different ports, and dynamically add intercom hardware. Operators can also individually adjust their own parameters such as equalization and noise gates – creating plenty of flexibility for all users.

One TV’s Stefano Gianolli confirmed that RTS’ advanced technology made it the ideal choice for the high specification OB truck. “The system is working very well, after a planned period of testing and commissioning. We are very pleased with the result and delighted to contribute to the success of The X Factor Italy.”

RTS EQUIPMENT LIST:

  • 1x ADAM-M midsize modular matrix intercom
  • 3x OMI OMNEO matrix interface card
  • 1x AIO16 analog I/O card kit
  • 20x KP-5032 keypanels
  • 10x KP-4016 keypanels
  • PH44 headsets
  • PH88 headsets

OMNEO is an architectural approach to connecting devices that need to exchange information such as audio content or device control.

Built upon multiple technologies, including IP and open public standards, OMNEO supports the technologies of today–such as Audinate’s Dante–while adopting the standards of tomorrow.

OMNEO offers a professional-grade media networking solution that provides interoperability, unique features for easier installation, better performance, and greater scalability than any other IP offering on the market.
